Partial Letter From: W. G. Bakewell (?), Louisville To: Benjamin Bakewell (?) Partial Letter, dated August 19, 1864, describing the precarious trip upriver to Louisville, where the boat was fired upon by Musketry and Rifles, and one person on board was shot. The Boat "Clara Belle" which preceded them by an hour or 2 was sunk by a Gun Battery. They did not fire a single shot at them. Since then, they put 15 shot and shell into the " Fairchild" and 50 to 100 shot into the St. Louis Boat "Empress" (?), killing and wounding 20 to 30 persons. Letter details the conditions of the widows and children whose husband's have been killed by the robbers. |
